The group exhibition On the Other Side brought together students from Helen Verhoeven's painting class at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK). Presented from June to July 2026, the exhibition explored themes of memory, identity, absence, and imagination, inviting visitors to reflect on what lies beyond immediate perception. Through painting, sculpture, and installation, the artists examined "the other side" as both a physical and emotional space, encouraging new ways of seeing the world.
Yeji Kim Exploring Hybrid Worlds
Among the participating artists in On the Other Side, Yeji Kim presents a surreal exploration of hybrid beings and organic forms. Her paintings Thread of Soul and Thread of Soul II (2026) depict dreamlike figures where human, animal, and anatomical elements merge within landscapes of flesh, plants, water, and skin.
Inspired by dreams, memories, death, and Korean folklore, Kim’s work explores the spaces between life and death, reality and fantasy, and the human and non-human. Her paintings create mysterious worlds where recognizable fragments of the body — such as limbs, eyes, or internal organs — appear alongside unfamiliar, transformed forms.
Through muted beige, purple, and brown tones, Kim builds delicate yet unsettling atmospheres in which organic structures and imagined creatures coexist. Rather than depicting fixed identities, her works reveal states of transition, reflecting on the hidden connections between living forms, memory, and the subconscious.
